Te Reo Māori and Cultural Confidence

Grow your confidence and awareness of Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique and rich Maori heritage, culture and language.

In this 3 part series, develop introductory language skills, learn about the history and principles of The Treaty and gain a greater awareness of Tikanga Māori, basic values, customs and principles.

With practical advice and steps on how to incorporate key learnings into the workplace, during this 3 part series you will:

Be introduced to Te Reo Māori and explore ways to normalise the language in your business - beginning with the basics of pronunciation and common words so that you can build confidence first and foremost. You will also learn a simple mihi (introduction) that you can use any occasion.

Make sense of the Te Tiriti o Waitangi by looking at what lead to the signing of The Treaty and some of the historical things that took place following the signing. Discuss the principles of The Treaty and how you can start to imbed them in your business.

Learn the values, customs and protocols that underpin tikanga Māori and Māori culture and understand core principles such as manaakitanga, kaitiakitanga, whanaungatanga, aroha and tino rangatiratanga.

  • Better connect with staff, customers and stakeholders, and demonstrate your organisation’s commitment to and support of diversity in the workplace.

  • Be more confident with basic pronunciation and normalising the use of Te Reo in the workplace

  • Introduce yourself in Te Reo, in a variety of business contexts

  • Start imbedding the principles of the Treaty into your business and journey towards becoming a better “treaty partner”.
