Learn the Basics of Te Reo Māori

Develop introductory language skills, including basic pronunciation, important names, greetings, farewells and acknowledgement.

Description

Whether you struggle with pronunciation, worry about getting it wrong, don’t know enough to speak te reo regularly, or want to be able to speak te reo with friends or whānau – this is the first step to being able to say “kia ora” with confidence.

Content

This workshop will provide you with an introduction to te reo Māori (the Māori language), beginning with the basics so that you can build confidence first and foremost, to go out there and have a go at te reo! We start with pronunciation, and then look at some practical ways to normalise the language in your business. We will also cover off a simple mihi (introduction) that you can use at any occasion (meeting with iwi, presentations, speeches/ceremonies etc).

Who Should Attend

Facilitated by Anton Matthews (Te Rarawa, Te Aupouri), this workshop starts with the very basics – you won’t be expected to know (or say) anything in te reo Māori initially, with this session dedicated to learning basic vowel and consonant sounds, understanding macrons, common words and phrases. Anton facilitates open and respectful conversations and provides practical advice and steps on how to incorporate key learnings into the workplace.
